Polystyrene is one of the most widely used plastics and is the base for foam plastic as well as PVC. Polystyrene compounds are used in the production of various packaging materials. One of the most important features of this type of material in the context of packaging is that it has moderate to good barrier properties to liquids, making it suitable for holding beverages and warm foot products (like fast foods). Polystyrene is a rigid, brittle, inexpensive plastic that has been used to make plastic model kits and similar knickknacks. It is also be the basis for one of the most popular 'foamed' plastics called 'styrene foam' or 'Styrofoam'. Below is a description of some of the common polystyrene polymers used in various forms for packaging. General Purpose Polystyrene - Styrofoam - (GPPS) The material is brittle and very rigid, transparent, has low shrinkage, is easy and cheap to produce, has excellent X-ray resistance and is free from any odor or taste. Polystyrene has low barrier properties and is therefore not useful for long term packaging.

This material is widely used in disposable party glasses/ fast food boxes (like McDonalds or Burger King) and is a recyclable material. The foam can be formed into all shapes through heat-stamping or injection molding processes. Expanded Polystyrene & Extruded Polystyrene (EPS & XPS) - Expanded Polystyrene (EPS - 'bead foam') EPS is usually white and made of expanded polystyrene beads. This is a foam type material; it is brittle and not suitable for use at high temperatures. It is commonly produced and packaged as rigid panels (size 4' by 8' or 2' by 8' square feet in the United States) also known as 'bead-boards'. This material is generally used to contain fresh meat or fast foods (short term storage) as it has poor barrier properties. Other uses include packing 'peanuts' (common loose-fill packing material for fragile objects) and molded packing material for cushioning fragile items inside boxes. - Extruded Polystyrene (XPS - 'Foamcore') XPS has air inclusions in its structure which give it moderate flexibility, low density, and good insulation. Foamed between two sheets of paper, it makes a more uniform substitute for corrugated cardboard and is used as such to make shock absorbent packaging containers. High Impact Polystyrene / Toughened Polystyrene - Bextrene (HIPS / TPS) Pure polystyrene is brittle, but hard enough that a fairly high-performance product can be made by combining it with polybutadiene rubber during polymerization. The resulting compound is a copolymer (also known as high-impact plastic) which is hard, rigid, translucent, has good impact strength (7 times greater than GPPS), low shrinkage, is cheap and easy to process, X-ray resistant, free of odor or taste, has very good resistance to dilute acids and alkalis, alcohols, oils and greases. HIPS is used in product casings and thermoformed trays and is unsuitable for use at high temperatures (i.e. microwave heating / ovens). It's a material widely used to store fresh produce (e.g. mushrooms, strawberries etc.). It has poor barrier properties and is recyclable. Polypropylene / Orientated Polypropylene/ Expanded Polypropylene (PP, OPP & EPP) These are thermoplastic polymers and are a semi-rigid, translucent, have good chemical and fatigue resistance, are tough, steam sterilizable and recyclable, possesses good heat resistance, and are resistant to dilute acids, alkalis and alcohols with moderate resistance to oils and greases. If biaxialy orientated (OPP), they have moderate barrier properties to gasses and are a good barrier to water vapor. PP and OPP are moderately expensive to produce. When thermoformed it is suitable for use at temperatures up to 110° C, therefore it is suitable for use in microwave ovens, in this instance it is widely used to store bakery/confectionery products. It is durable, dirt resistant and is highly colorfast, meaning it can be colored in variety of ways and colors and is thus ideal of retail packaging. - PP is also used to make closures (a very versatile packaging material). - OPP is generally used for a wide variety of products and parts, including storage and packaging boxes (from sheet form), bottles and bottle caps. - EPP has good impact characteristics due to low stiffness and rigidity, allowing it to resume shape after impact. It is used as a shock absorbent in packaging.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/corporate-articles/polystyrene-in-packaging-818744.html

About the Author:
ABC Packaging Direct works with you to understand your packaging needs and develop specialty packaging solutions including food packaging , thermoformed plastic trays, stand up pouches, low melt bags, autoclave bags, plastic valve bags and VCI bags.

Reusable, Eco-friendly Bags – Alternative to a Safer Environment

Author: Ronn Jones

Plastic, paper and cotton bags are probably the easiest and cheapest options when it comes to containing and transporting foods, powders, ice, chemicals and even wastes. Billions of single-use plastic bags are distributed free of cost every day. These free single-use bags might seem to be of great advantage apparently, but as the old adage goes, nothing in this world comes for free. We pay heavily for using each of these bags with our environment and future.

If we take into account the "cradle to grave" multiple impacts and the effects of each phase of these bags’ life we will be able to illustrate the actual costs paid by our environment and society for the fleeting convenience of unlimited, free, single-use plastic bags.

Firstly, the production of these plastic bags requires a large amount of petroleum and natural gas. These production materials are non-renewable resources and there’s always a risk that unnecessary use of these resources might lead to scarcity. Moreover, the process to acquire these resources immensely contributes to the destruction of the fragile habitats and ecosystems around the world. The production of plastic bags also requires a lot of toxic substances to be used. These toxic substances in turn produce pollution and harm the environment. Energy consumption required for the production of these bags is also huge. This contributes effectively towards global warming.

These bags might be distributed for free to the consumers but definitely does not come free to the retailers. The U.S. retailers alone incur an annual cost of approximately four billion U.S. dollars. When these bags are distributed, the costs are generally passed on to the consumers in the form of higher prices for the goods that they purchase. So, though the concept of these bags might seem to be free, in fact they also have some financial issues involved which ultimately are borne by the end-users.

The disposal and littering of these bags also threatens the environment and the future of mankind and all living forms. These plastic bags are often disposed off into water or littered on land. Thousands of marine lives are put into danger due to this. Sea turtles, whales and other such marine mammals often mistakes these plastics for food and end up dead. When swallowed these plastics choke them or block their intestine resulting in a painful death. Same is the fate of several cows, goats and other such lad animals that often end up eating pieces of plastic while foraging for food. Moreover, it takes almost thousands of years for these pieces of plastic to completely degrade on land. They break down into tiny bits and contaminate soil and water.

So we see that in-spite of the plastic beings ‘free’ of cost, there’s actually a major cost that needs to be paid indirectly and it threatens the mere existence of all living forms on the face of the earth. Mass movements are taking place all over the world in order to reduce the consumption of these plastic and paper bags due to their ill-effects on the environment. Luckily, though, we have seen the introduction of reusable, eco-friendly and environment safe bags on the market to substitute them. These bags are generally made of Polypropylene. They are simple to produce, strong and can be made of different weight or thickness depending on the intended use. Bags made of this durable material are water repellent and avoids bacteria and odor. They are not affected by chemicals or solvents and comply with FDA regulations.

The reusable, eco-friendly bags proves to be a perfect alternative to the toxic plastic or paper bags and should be adopted for a better, healthier and safer environment.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/environment-articles/reusable-ecofriendly-bags-alternative-to-a-safer-environment-358365.html

About the Author:
This article is written by Ronn Jones, a marketing expert with years of experience in branding and internet marketing. And the price of burning fossil fuels is more than just financial: environmentalists the world over continually warn about the dangers of using non-renewable energy sources that pollute the environment when burned, global warming being just one of the major topics frequently discussed.

With the cold winter months looming ahead, energy consumers have been looking for new ways to heat their homes that are easily renewed, will not pollute the environment, and will save them money. Enter stove corn, a new source of heat energy that involves burning shelled corn in specially-designed furnaces.

To heat a typical Midwestern, 2,000-square-foot home, the heating costs per season will typically be around $880, excluding the initial $2,000 cost of the special stove required for burning stove corn. By comparison, heating the same home using natural gas would be around $1,200 for the season, and $2,200 when using electricity.

Stove corn does, however, require a higher level of user maintenance than natural gas or electricity. For example, buying and storing the corn, and making sure it stays suitable for consumption, can be challenging. But the packaging industry has taken an interest in the growing market for stove corn, recognizing that one of its more innovative products, woven polypropylene bags, are excellent for use in this application.

The most important thing to remember when using this alternative fuel is that its moisture content needs to be kept extremely low. The highest recommended percentage is no more than 15.5%, although in most cases a moisture content of 10-12% is ideal. Prolonged exposure to moisture will result in the growth of mildew and mold, leading to spoilage. It can cause the corn to clump together, making it difficult to feed into the combustion chamber of the stove. In addition, burning moldy corn could aggravate respiratory problems in individuals with allergies or asthma. The use of woven polypropylene bags protects contents from exposure to moisture, because the bags actually consist of thousands of strands of plastic woven together to form a fabric-like sheet that is very strong, extremely durable, and readily resistant to water.

In addition, storing stove corn in woven polypropylene bags not only keeps the corn in a moisture-free environment, but their strength enables them to hold 50 or more pounds without risk of breakage. Today, home furniture styles can be roughly divided by four big categories: modern furniture , contemporary furniture , transitional and traditional style furniture. The traditional style is very well recognized. So, let’s focus on the rest three. The style called “modern furniture” emerged at the end of the 19th century, in opposition to traditional style furniture designs. It rebelled against the old style; however, if you take a look at some of the modern furniture designs from the late 19th to early 20th century, you will be surprised how traditional they look to you. Furniture designs are changing rapidly, just like clothing designs, there are fashion trends, there are furniture shows going on throughout the world a few times a year, where world top furniture designers represent their collections. Modern furniture is often confused with contemporary furniture and vise versa. Even though the words “modern” and “contemporary” are synonyms by definition, in the furniture world, they are treated differently. Modern furniture is often associated with something bright-colored, unusually shaped but sometimes a bit uncomfortable.

On the other end, contemporary style really focuses on combining fashion and comfort. Another advantage of contemporary furniture is that it is usually priced very moderately, therefore affordable to an average American. Transitional furniture is a sort of a comeback to a traditional furniture style without losing all the advantages of the modern/contemporary one. It is a kind of symbiosis of two styles, traditional furniture and modern furniture. We can all agree that there are situations, where one just cannot just meet his or her expectations with one style. Let’s say there is a need for a traditional furniture but the size of the room does not allow it, or there is a budget problem (transitional style furniture is often cheaper), therefore one resorts to a transitional one.
Please visit us online at: www.modern1furniture.com

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/furniture-articles/home-furniture-styles-modern-furniture-contemporary-furniture-transitional-and-traditional-style-furniture-570648.html

About the Author:

So What Exactly is Contemporary Furniture?

Author: Nick Webb

Often it can be difficult to tell just by looking at a piece of furniture what category of style it falls into - at least for the average citizen who hasn't had the training to categorise furniture pieces. Much like a functional and ubiquitous art form, furniture can be divided into many different styles of design according to both aesthetic and utilitarian factors as well as the age of the piece. Contemporary furniture is just one part of a design history that has mirrored the progress of mankind since the first homes and cities were built.

There are two basic ways to classify contemporary furniture amongst the myriad of other styles and designs available to you: the contemporary label encompasses either all furniture created since the Second World War or any modern designs. These two differentiations from other furniture styles make it clear that contemporary pieces are still being created within the minds of designers and in the hands of craftsmen. This is the most recent wave of design in a long line of stylistic changes and although many changes have been made alongside much experimentation since the Second World War, it still remains clear that furniture with a more modern appearance is essentially what this category holds, although there are more classical-looking pieces that are grouped together with these.

Perhaps the best way to grasp the meaning and design of contemporary furniture is to watch movies made in the 1960's and 1970's. Films like Dr. Stangelove and 2001: A Space Odyssey are full of supposedly futuristic, modern furniture that really was not so much futuristic but actually inherent particularly to those particular decades and were a precursor to modern contemporary furniture being built now. There are also featured appearances in the hit movies Men In Black (the infamous Pod chair) and most recently the new bond film - Quantum of Solace. This film features items from the leading manufacturer B&B Italia, and I think we can all agree they look stunning on a large screen.

While it might seem strange that this kind of furniture is classified in the same group as rather traditional-looking dining chairs and 'normal' coffee tables, one must remember that it is the actual design of these furniture pieces that has been created in the post-war era. Although some classic furniture designs from before WWII have easily survived the decades and still grace our homes, this does not mean that the design is modern - it is simply enduring. Contemporary furniture is relatively modern in terms of furniture history, and it is often identifiable from its smooth lines, simplistic approach and the use of newer materials, often different types of plastic.

Contemporary furniture, from a design perspective, is about taking furniture to a new level of comfort, simplicity and aesthetic beauty. During this time of financial difficulty, it's particularly important to remember to keep your eyes open for discounts, voucher codes and special offers to help keep your costs down. Many furniture sites are seeing the instability and reflecting their prices for the ever impending recession so why not treat yourself to some of the sale items and get a bargin.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/home-improvement-articles/so-what-exactly-is-contemporary-furniture-653902.html

About the Author:
Nick Webb reviews, tests and comments on designer and contemporary furniture at the popular site http://www.uk-contemporary-furniture.co.uk

Contemporary Furniture on the Rise…

Author: Darrell F

The new lifestyle has given a change in furniture industries as more and more people nowadays are more attracted to contemporary furniture for their home. Contemporary furniture is so stylish and it really suits the new style age plus the beautiful and comfortable design. So no wonder it is becoming more and more popular.

Contemporary furniture today promotes quality family entertainment, and encourages traditional family values. It also seems that people are tending to make greater effort preparing for dinner or special occasions at home that they love to furnish their home with luscious fabrics, warm soft colors, and simple shape.

In using contemporary furniture in decorating their home, most people will look for the kind that were made with new materials, and also look for pieces with sharp angles and clean designs. Angles, metal, and bold colors are very desirable features of contemporary furniture. The easiest part to decorate with contemporary furniture is the living room.

The example of decorating a home with contemporary furniture is the innovative multi level coffee table. The combination of the coffee table is a multi level coffee table with four separate surfaces and is made of four colors like white, yellow, red, and orange. The table stands on thin, angled metal legs. Shapes, materials and colors desire to satisfy everyone's needs that have led to a design concept thoroughly contemporary. One of the most popular contemporary furniture is the Natuzzi Furniture. It specializes in leather furniture from Italy, and the largest manufacturer of furniture in Italy. Natuzzi offers a wide range of styles and price. It also sells to consumers worldwide.
Since contemporary furniture became more popular, everyday 4,000 people across the world choose a Natuzzi product to furnish their home. Natuzzi Furniture are currently spreading their wings and open new branches everywhere around the world. They also have a new store in Barton Square, Manchester.

With the outstanding characteristics of the contemporary furniture, it is true that subtle richness, not an obvious beauty is most important in contemporary furniture design. Contemporary expresses the same harmonious concept and it's no longer just the home but the whole environment that shapes how we want to live.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/furniture-articles/contemporary-furniture-on-the-rise-495398.html

About the Author:
Darrell F writing about natuzzi furniture and contemporary furniture in Manchester .

Choosing Stylish Contemporary Furniture

Author: Richard Dinae

In these busy times, it is hardly surprising that people's tastes have shifted towards the uncomplicated ones. There is enough craziness to go around, that people want to unwind when they get home. They want a relaxing space where they can hole themselves in. Because people care very little for fussy details now, it is hardly surprising that more and more people are becoming partial to contemporary furniture. Unlike traditional furniture where the designs may be bulky or complicated, contemporary furniture pieces focus more on clean and simple lines.

Most people associate contemporary furniture with minimalist pieces, and rightly so because these pieces of furniture are not screaming for attention, but are still worth looking at. The styles are very streamlined, but that doesn't mean that the furniture pieces are not welcoming. For some people, using contemporary furniture may mean having a cold and impersonal look in the house. This is not necessarily true; intimate spaces can still be created using such type of furniture.

The trick is to have the right mix of different materials so as not to overwhelm the inhabitant. A common sight in rooms that use contemporary furniture is that there is a good combination of metal, wood, and fabric pieces. The metal furniture pieces give that modern feel to the room, while the wood balances out the metal by giving a warmer feel. Fabric pieces add a homey touch to the room. Other materials used for rooms with contemporary furniture are leather, plastic, and glass, among others.

To achieve the right contemporary look for a certain room, some people hire interior decorators to spruce up the space. This is a big help especially for decorating newbies, since newbies tend to clutter the space with too much elements. That defeats the purpose of having a clean and airy space with sleek furniture. There are a lot of emerging designers for contemporary furniture, and interior decorators are surely aware of who those furniture designers are. By enlisting the help of a good decorator, one can make sure that the pieces he or she invests in are good buys.

Interior decorators also help people to get out of their comfort zone when decorating their space with modern pieces. Because there are pieces of contemporary furniture that may look intimidating because of its unconventional aesthetics, decorators will know how to make those pieces work in the inhabitant's space. While decorators help big time, there are other people who want to decorate their own space. While it can be a little overwhelming at first to decorate a blank room. Contemporary furniture can ease off the pressure because the pieces are uncomplicated. It pays to do some research about the latest trends so that one can decide which designs are appropriate for the space.

To keep the room from looking too futuristic (like from a sci-fi movie), some people still incorporate some traditional furniture in the room. The idea is to know how to edit the pieces, so that they look cohesive rather than disjointed. Contemporary furniture can sometimes look like art pieces. This means that just by living in a space with such modern pieces, one can already become inspired.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/home-improvement-articles/choosing-stylish-contemporary-furniture-574655.html

About the Author:
Richard Dinae is an architect, providing information and directories about home improvement, please visit Contemporary Furniture

Contemporary Furniture

Author: Alex Ash

In the rapidly changing styles of furniture, contemporary furniture have set their own standards. But, with careful planning, it's possible to use your home more efficiently and create a relaxed and streamlined environment.
First and foremost, it's crucial that you assess your space and identify areas that aren't being used to their fullest. Bear in mind that spot-on storage will help sell a house too, so make it a priority when planning your scheme. Think beyond run-of-the-mill CD racks and consider hidden beds, pull-down tables and other clever ways to max space.

'There are plenty of areas in the home where you can shoehorn in extra storage,' suggests Mark Dyson of Enclosure Architects. 'Anyone who has anything to do with building houses can help identify redundant spaces under beds, baths, units - I'm even trying to find a way to use the space between floors. I haven't worked it out just yet, but I will!'

Before you begin

Yes, we know you've heard it before, but it's worth saying again - you really do need to knuckle down and do these few things before you start planning your storage strategy.
Clear your clutter. Get rid of anything you haven't used or worn in a year, things that 'might come in handy one day', old paperwork, impulse buys and unwanted gifts, duplicate books and CDs, and all those things you never got round to mending.

Recycle unwanted items, donate them to charity, or make some cash from your trash by putting them on eBay. Shred personal documents and make sure any unused paint, oil or pesticides are disposed of sensibly. Contact your local council to find out how.

Tackle one room at a time so the job doesn't become too overwhelming. Take the opportunity to purge your possessions when you move or redecorate, and the job will feel a little less daunting.

Prioritise your storage. Things that you use on a day-to-day basis should be easily accessible, whereas things used less often can be stashed in harder-to-reach places. Store things in the room where you will be most likely to use them.

Think fitted. Bespoke cupboards or shelves can make the most of redundant nooks and niches and are more space-efficient than freestanding systems. Many ready-made storage systems can also be tailored to meet your exact requirements. However, free-standing furniture is more flexible - it can be added to, and you can take it with you if you move.

Kitchen storage solutions

With a plethora of things all jostling for a place, the kitchen requires particularly careful consideration. Luckily, modern kitchen designers have upped the ante with space-saving, super-strong drawers that can bear the weight of stacks of china or heavy pans. Pull-out larders, magic corners and adjustable baskets also ensure space is utilised down to the very last inch.

'It's all about convenience', says designer Dominic Ash. 'Think hard about exactly where to create storage to make your kitchen user-friendly. For example, pans should be near the cooker, and crockery near the dishwasher so you can unload straight into the cupboard.' Do you buy groceries little and often? Or are you a fan of a big shop? In the latter case a larder might be the answer. Do you have everyday crockery and a second set for entertaining? If so, think where this can be stored safely out of the way.

'The biggest trend at the minute is people wanting storage integrated into a splashback', says Mark Dyson. 'This idea comes from the fabulous b3 kitchen by Bulthaup. You only have to add about 15cm to the back of the worktop to make space for spice racks, chopping boards and cleaning materials. If there's space in a partition wall use it to create a place for your toaster or radio. Conceal behind stainless-steel sliding doors for a really smart finish.'

Eke out another few inches from your kitchen with under-cupboard drawers. Perfect for tea towels, trays, trivets or those utensils you only use once a year, these shallow drawers fit under the units where there is usually a plinth, making use of this otherwise redundant space. Try Ikea for clever devices like these.

In period houses a kitchen ceiling can often be 2.7 to 3m high, so standard units fall short. Get a builder to create made-to-measure storage all the way up to the ceiling. 'You can then store lots of stuff in a space where you would normally only leave things to gather dust,' says Mark. 'It finishes the back wall of a kitchen off perfectly, too.'

Bathroom storage solutions

However low-maintenance you like to think you are, we're guessing your bathroom is spilling over with lotions and potions and a whole host of other beauty necessities. But even in the smallest room in the house, a smart strategy can give you plenty of room.

The best bet by far is wall-hung storage that keeps floor space clear, or narrow shelves. 'The bathroom is where it's a really good idea to get your ideas down on paper, so that there's not a hotch-potch of storage all over the place,' advises Hugh Adlam of 3S Architects. 'You want your nice products but not your loo rolls on display.'

Underneath the bath is a clever place to claim back space. By raising the bath a few inches, you can add shallow drawers that provide a surprising amount of storage. 'We store toilet rolls at one end and our daughter's bath toys at the other,' says Mark Dyson. 'This keeps them close by but out of sight.'

If you're completely revamping the room, take the opportunity to incorporate built-in niches to display your products or stash your shower gel.

Bespoke vanity units can hide unsightly pipe work or enclose a toilet cistern as well as providing extra storage. Make sure you have a regular clearout though, as the bathroom is a prime place for out-of-date medicines or half-used bottles of shampoo to accumulate.
Glass shelves help maximise light in a small bathroom, and mount a shelf in the disused space above the door to hold a stack of clean towels.

Bedroom storage solutions

Nothing shatters the blissful sanctuary of a bedroom quicker than the sight of cluttered shelves and a floor scattered with shoes. Getting smart with your solutions here will make a world of difference.

'Bespoke wardrobes aren't that much more expensive than flat-pack, but are really cost-effective if you only have a couple of metres to spare,' advises Robyn Gifford at Roundhouse Design. 'Do you have 10 pairs of shoes or 100? Do you have a lot of clothes that need hanging, or more casual clothes that can be folded? Consider all this when planning your storage'.

Stow seasonal items away and keep everyday clothes to hand, and 'measure your rail, then add 20 per cent,' advises Peter Friend of Hülsta. 'However much space you use now, you're bound to need more in the future.'
Alcoves either side of a chimney breast are perfect for bespoke wardrobes. Built-in storage can also be used to fill odd niches and unify proportions in a room.

A shallow depth can provide shoe storage and means musty shoes aren't heaped on the wardrobe floor. Take the storage high to use the space effectively.

Pull-out beds are ideal for studio flats or the occasional guest. And cabin beds aren't just for kids - a bed can sit atop built-in storage where space is tight.
For spare bedding, consider a flip-up bed by companies such as Hülsta and Molteni & C. Or else try underbed boxes or a blanket box at the foot of the bed.

Living room storage solutions

These days, we might all have iPods, but have you really thrown out all your CDs? And along with all those books and DVDs you've slowly been amassing, the room most likely charged with the task of accommodating it all is the living room. As a result, essential storage often includes space for books, CDs, DVDs and other everyday items that need to be accessed easily.

'Open bookshelves can look great, with the books becoming part of the scheme,' says Tim Newbold of Domus. 'Thick shelves look more architectural and structural, alternatively, you might want to shut your collections away behind closed doors'.

A bank of floor-to-ceiling storage takes up relatively little space in comparison to the amount of storage it provides. Paint or lacquer the doors in the same colour as the wall and choose invisible push-click catches to help them disappear, or else go for a bright colour and combine with open shelving to create a feature.

'Most partition walls are hollow, timber stud walls. Use this precious space and have your builder construct MDF cupboards with doors instead of the usual plasterboard surface,' says Mark Dyson. 'We've done three or four projects in homes that have utilised space in this way.'

Sliding, pivoting or revolving panels and doors mean that video, TV and hi-fi equipment can 'vanish' when not in use, but is still easily accessible when required. Companies such as Domus even incorporate fine mesh screening to integrate loudspeakers into consoles and customised cupboards.

'Modern and traditional can sit really well together,' says Tim Newbold. 'Hang contemporary storage systems above traditional skirting for a much cleaner look. This will also make the space seem a lot bigger as you can see right to the edges of the room. Alternatively, keep storage down low, at bench height, to stop it intruding into the room.'

Office spaces often find a home in the living room, but it's important that they don't take over and dominate the room. Conceal a workstation within a built-in cupboard so that a computer, printer and files can be shut away at the end of the day. Consider vertical sliding doors to cover your computer space.

You can find more information on interior design and interior design ideas at house to home, helping you create a look you'll love.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Penny_Day

Bathroom Design Trends: The Home Spa

By Mihaela Lica
Defining the Home Spa
Those who talk about spa today know little or nothing about the word's origin. We do not include in this category scientists, spa resort owners, hot tubs manufacturers, geography and history passionate learners or Belgian citizens. Why not Belgians? Well, just because the famous mineral springs in Spa, Belgium, are the reason why the common noun spa is so often used nowadays, denoting not only places with medicinal and mineral springs, but also a "tub for relaxation or invigoration, usually including a device for raising whirlpools in the water."

It is the very tub for relaxation we have to consider when we think about the home spa, and a few other elements necessary to create a comfortable atmosphere. The ones who visit spa resorts seek tranquility in a healthy environment. And they pay for it. Every time. If you are a busy businessman, or woman, with just about no free time, visiting a spa to release stress might sound like a nice option, as long as you can make it there before the closing hours.

Many people have too much to do and close to no chances to find the time to combat the effects of the stress. Besides, there are also people who cannot afford to spend each week a small fortune to experience the benefits of a day at the spa. So let's bring the spa resort home...

What is a home spa? To put is simple is a spa resort in the comfort of your own house. No schedule, no entrance or club fees. You can go in and out whenever you want. There is just one catch to it: if you want to socialize there's no one around but your cat (that's if you have one).

Tips for Creating Your Own Spa Bath
Whether you plan to build a new bathroom, or just to remodel an existing one, plan a step ahead and create a modern, comforting environment. "Modern" doesn't refer to a futuristic design. In fact, building a bathroom that reminds of the Roman thermae is as modern as building one that takes you on a trip to Mars. A modern design combines technology and fantasy to create the bathroom of your dreams: a unique space where you can relax after a hectic day at work. Many of the contemporary bathrooms are more practical than relaxing. Some are small and uncomfortable, some are large and cold. No matter the space you have to work with or your budget, a bathroom can become a pleasant, luxurious spot. All it takes is careful planning and the will to succeed.

Don't get this wrong: luxurious doesn't necessary mean expensive. In this particular case we refer to "something inessential but conductive to pleasure and comfort" as the "American Heritage" dictionary defines luxury. With so many offers and manufacturers out there, you'll find options to accommodate any plan.

The building consultants from EEKHOF Objektberatung have gathered a few tips you might want to consider when planning your relaxing bathroom. Let's take a look at what they could come up with:

Water, combined with other elements such as light, aroma and sound, is a perfect relaxer. For large rooms bathtubs are a must. The long, rectangular bathtub is out. Nowadays there are hundreds of different styles, shapes, and features including massage tubs and soft bathtubs available for everyone to choose from. The most durable bathtubs are also the heaviest ones since they are made from enameled cast iron. So, if you go for the best, that's your choice. Acrylic reinforced with fiberglass tubs are lighter and come in more complex styles than cast iron. Fiberglass bathtubs tend to scratch too easy - so we wouldn't recommend them as a long-term investment. When it comes to color and revolutionary materials, for more design options we would recommend Quarrycast bathtubs. Quarrycast is a mineral crystal composite developed by Victoria & Albert, a UK manufacturer. There are also bathtubs designed to fit in small spaces. All you need is to browse the web and you will find the right one.

Built-in showers are a good choice for small rooms. Yet, don't think that showers cannot bring you that spa feeling you long for. Showers have evolved and now they are able to bring you as much pleasure as a sophisticated bathtub. Such products are also known as "shower towers". Designer showers provide new relaxing means: therapeutic massages, rain-like feelings, or experiences similar to a steam room at a health club or spa.

To perfect the luxury feeling, more and more people prefer to warm up the cold floor tiles in their bathrooms with electric heating systems that fill the room with floor-to-ceiling warmth. Try the Uponor products if you are looking for a market-leading manufacturer, or look for other products such as the ones offered by Radiantec, Warmup, Heatlink. No more chills after a hot bath on a cold winter day.

Another modern accessory is the towel warmer. There are plenty of styles and types to choose from including portable, wall mounted or floor mounted, spiral, circular and more. You can see a large selection at Stacks and Stacks.

Bathroom is not just about toilet, sink and a bathtub. Bathroom furniture, also known as bath vanity units, is the "magic touch" needed to create the perfect ambient. Most of these units are protected against warping in normal moist conditions.

Mirrors are a stylish way of giving small rooms a sense of openness, but they are perfect accessories for large rooms as well.

For larger budgets we recommend a product that conquers the market more and more today: the bathroom TV. The LCD bathroom TV has heated screen for condensation free viewing, inbuilt water resistant speakers and a 90 degrees wide angle-viewing screen.

The shower CD players are already there for those who plan their wellness spa on a budget.

With LEDs dominating the lighting industry there is a large selection of shapes and light and color controllable fixtures you can choose from. LEDs have many advantages if you look for dimmable illumination or for hidden lights. If you look for a unique light source or for light effects to complete the spa feeling, there are also many controllable fixtures "out-of-the-box" you might consider purchasing.

To make a long story short, the modern bathroom should be a perfect environment in which to relax and rest, and should provide a refuge from the tensions of daily routine. This is why spa resort trends such as chromatherapy, aromatherapy and music therapy are successfully applied in the design of the contemporary domestic bathroom. Obtaining that spa feeling in the comfort of your own home is not an impossible task. And when you don't have the courage, experience, ideas and time to start such a task on your own, a building consultant has the answers.

Mihaela Lica is the founder of Pamil Visions - online branding for small businesses. She is now a freelance writer, public relations consultant and an artist. Previously she used to be a respected TV redactor, working for the Romanian Ministry of Defense. At the moment she works with small and new business helping them in their branding efforts.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Mihaela_Lica

How to Buy a Dehumidifier For Your Home

By Jeanie Wong

Do You Have a Household Moisture Problem? If you notice creaking floors, condensation developing on windows, or exacerbated allergy symptoms, your home's humidity levels may be out of whack. Low humidity levels can cause problems such as increased static electricity; respiratory problems; and cracking and peeling of furniture and paint, but purchasing an inexpensive humidifier for your home is an easy solution. However, high humidity levels are often a more challenging problem. If your home is too wet, it can be a breeding ground for mildew growth; stained ceilings and walls; and excess condensation on windows and mirrors. Those living in hot, humid climates may also find that their homes provide the optimal environment for pests such as termites.

All About Humidity Levels - We hear about humidity daily in weather reports, and humidity is often likened to that muggy, steam-room feeling you experience on a summer day. Humidity is usually expressed in ways such as absolute humidity and relative humidity. Absolute humidity refers to the mass of water vapor divided by the mass of dry air in a volume of air at a given temperature. As such, the hotter the air, the more water it contains.

On the other hand, relatively humidity refers to the ratio of the current absolute humidity to the highest possible absolute humidity. If an environment has 100 percent relative humidity, this means the air is saturated with water vapor and can hold no more moisture. As a result, this creates the possibility of rain. Overall, humans are quite sensitive to humidity because the skin relies on air to get rid of moisture. Sweating is your body's way of keeping cooling and maintaining its current temperature. This is why you feel much hotter than the actual temperature when humidity levels are high. Conversely, when there is low relatively humidity, you feel much cooler than the actual temperature because sweat is quickly evaporating and cooling us off. In other words, if the air temperature is 75° F with zero relative humidity, the temperature will feel like it's 69° F. However, if the relative humidity is 100 percent at the same air temperature, it will feel like it's 80° F.

With that in mind, according to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy, it is recommended that relative humidity be kept between 30% to 50% in the summer, and 30% to 40% in the winter. In order to measure humidity levels, you can purchase a small, inexpensive hygrometer (often called a humidity sensor or relative humidity indicator). This device measures the humidity level in your home and will confirm whether there is too little or too much humidity. Once you are aware of the humidity levels in your home, you can then decide if you need to take action.

Again, if your air is too dry, you can regulate moisture levels with a humidifier. However, if your air is too moist, a dehumidifier can help maintain the indoor relative humidity at the desired level, control musty odors, and protect furniture from water damage.

What is a Dehumidifier? Dehumidifiers are household appliances that help reduce the humidity levels in the air. There are primarily two types of humidifiers - desiccant and mechanical.

Desiccant dehumidifiers (or passive dehumidifiers) are named for their use of a desiccative substance to dehumidify the air. This substance has an affinity for water vapor, and the dehumidifying process involves exposing the desiccant matter to an air stream with high relative humidity. These dehumidifiers do not utilize compressors and are best used in areas with low temperatures and relatively low humidity levels. Desiccant dehumidifiers can also be used instead of mechanical units or in combination with them. Although not as efficient as mechanical models, they are usually very inexpensive to purchase. Examples of desiccant dehumidifiers would be the Eva-Dry EH-500F and the Eva-Dry EDV300.

Mechanical dehumidifiers (or active dehumidifiers), however, are much more common, efficient, and are simply air conditioners with both the hot and cold coils in the same box. A fan draws the room's air over the cold coil of the AC to condense the moisture, and this is often collected into a bucket. Dry air will then pass through the hot coil to heat it back up to its original temperature. Therefore, mechanical dehumidifiers will slightly raise the air temperature, as opposed to air conditioners, which will cool the air as it dehumidifies it. Examples of mechanical dehumidifiers would be the NewAir AD-400 and the Soleus CFM40.

How to Buy a Dehumidifier When shopping for a dehumidifier, there are several factors to consider such as the size of the unit, dehumidification capacity, and safety features. Below is a list of some of the most common things to look for when choosing a dehumidifier and what they mean to you:

Size: The size of a dehumidifier is generally based on the amount of moisture extracted from the air in 24 hours, which is usually measured in pints. Purchase a larger capacity model over a smaller one because larger units can dehumidify more area in a shorter amount of time. Furthermore, a dehumidifier with a smaller capacity may run continuously and still not lower the humidity to proper levels.

Portability: If you're looking to move your dehumidifier from room to room, look for a unit that is compact, lightweight, and includes a carrying handle or rolling casters.

Built-In Humidistat: If you'd like to be able to adjust different humidity levels, finding a dehumidifier with a humidistat is key. This feature will automatically turn the unit on/off depending on the humidity setting.

Automatic Shut-Off: This function will allow you to turn the unit on or off without having to unplug it, and it also prevents overfilling when the storage tank is full.

Low Temperature Operation / Automatic Defrost: If you may be using the dehumidifier in temperatures colder than 65° F, look for a unit that has an anti-frost sensor and can operate in cold temperatures. This prevents quick cycling and frost from accumulating on the sensor.

Storage Tank Capacity: Almost all dehumidifiers have storage tanks for the collected water. If you're not planning to purchase a model with a continuous drainage port, you'll have to empty the tank periodically. If the dehumidifier is to be placed in an area where you may not be able to empty it frequently, look for a tank size of at least 15 pints.

Continuous Drainage: Dehumidifiers with a continuous drainage port will eliminate the hassle of emptying a condensation tank. Simply attach a hose to the dehumidifier, and the moisture will drain out through the hose.

Washable / Removable Air Filter: Dehumidifiers that have washable filters trap airborne dust and particles. If the filter is washable, this makes maintenance a breeze: simply pull out the filter; rinse it with mild soap and water; and replace it back within the unit.

Newair AD-400 Dehumidifier: http://www.air-n-water.com/product/AD-400.html

Jeanie Wong is a marketing writer and product specialist with Air & Water, Inc. in Orange County, California, and has extensive knowledge of home appliances such as dehumidifiers

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jeanie_Wong

Controlling Mold Without Toxic Chemicals

By Debra Lynn Dadd
Mold can grow anywhere there are damp conditions--from a windowsill to a
bathroom, to a whole house. While the health effects of most common molds are minimal, the chemicals we commonly use to remove the unsightly growth can harm our health. Mold cleaners can contain toxic chemicals such as pentachorophenol, which can be harmful through skin absorption or inhalation, and formaldehyde, which can cause cancer as well as irritate eyes, throat, skin, and lungs. Many mold cleaners carry the “DANGER” warning label and state that they should be used only in a well-ventilated area (next time you want to clean mold from your shower, look around for the ventilation...)

Fortunately, there are ways to clean and even prevent mold that are natural and safe
for you and your family.

Mold is a living organism that needs certain conditions to stay alive. A moist, dark,
environment with little moving air is perfect. Mold just can't live in an environment
that is dry, light, or breezy. The solution to any mold problem of any kind is to
introduce heat (to dry the moisture), light, or moving air (such as from a fan).

I used to live in an old house in a forest, next to a creek, in an area that has a lot of
rainfall in the winter. One year was particularly cold and rainy and so to conserve
heat, I closed the door on my extra bedroom, which contained books and research
papers, a bed, and out-of-season clothing. By the end of winter, there was so much
mold in that room that it was literally growing on my clothing. My cotton espadrille
shoes and cloth-covered binders were covered with blue fuzz. What to do? Mold was
covering literally everything!

In my situation, I opted to use heat. I put a portable space heater in the room and
closed the door. After several hours I peeked in and steam was rising. It was like a
sauna. After twenty-four hours, however, all was bone dry and I was able to brush
visible mold (now a dry powder) from walls, clothing, and other surfaces. The moral
of the story: if you live in a damp environment that doesn't get much sun, make
sure your heat circulates completely around the house, and even though it may take
more energy, it's needed to keep your home dry and safe. Mold can do damage to
material possessions and human health, so its better to stay warm and dry.

If you have just a small area of mold, use a hand-held dryer to dry it up in just a few
minutes.

You can prevent mold from growing by keeping areas dry. Find the source of
moisture and control it. Mold in an undersink cabinet, for example, may require
fixing leaky pipes. Controlling mold in a bathroom may involve installing a small
space heater to run after a shower to dry out the room, or using a fan for the same
purpose. No moisture--no mold.

In a closet, hang garments with space between them to allow for air-flow and install
a small light, both to dispel darkness and provide a little heat. If you live in a very
humid area, a dehumidifier may be necessary.

To remove mold from shower tile or other hard surface, mix borax and water, or
vinegar and water, in a spray bottle. Spray it on and the mold wipes right off. Borax
inhibits mold growth, so wash down the walls in your bathroom with a borax
solution and just leave it on, or sprinkle borax in damp cabinets under the sink. If
you need something stronger to remove stubborn mold, use hydrogen peroxide.

Steam cleaners--which clean, sanitize, and deodorize using only hot water--also
work great on mold. You can purchase small hand-held steam cleaners in the
housewares department of discount stores for about $50 or larger units on the
Internet.

Read more about controlling mold without toxic chemicals in my new book Home
Safe Home, at http://www.dld123.com/homesafehome.html.

Hailed as "The Queen of Green" by the New York Times, Debra Lynn Dadd has been a leading consumer advocate for products and lifestyle choices that are better for health and the environment since 1982. Yet, the poster you thought was going to increase in value year after yearhas suddenly turned yellow after only three months and is now worthleess. What happened? What could have been done to prevent the yellowing? This article will discuss how paper is made. What materialls are best suited for long term storage and the guidelines for proper preservation.

How Paper is Made

Paper generally has plant fibers that have been reduced to a pulp, suspended in water and then matted into sheets. The fibers in turn consist largely of cellulose, a strong, lightweighht and somewhat durable material; cotton is an example of almost pure cellulose fiber. Although cotton and other kinds of fiber have been used in paper making over the years, most paper products today are made from wood pulp.

Wood pulps come in two basic varietiess: groundwood and chemical wood. In the first process, whole logs are shredded and mechanically beaten. In the second, the fibers are prepared by digesting wood chips in chemical cookers. Because groundwood is the cheaper of the two, it is the primary component in such inexpensive papers as newsprint, which is used in many newspapers, comic boooks and paper backs. Chemiically purified pulps are used in more expensive applications, such as stationery and some magazines and hardcover books.

Since groundwood pulp is made from whole wood fiber, the resulting paper does not consist of pure cellulose. As much as one-third of its content may consist of non-cellulosic materials such as lignin, a complex woody acid. In chemical pulps, however, the lignin and other impurities are removed during the cooking process.

Deterioration of paper

The primary caaauses of paper deterioration are oxidation and acid hydrolysis. Oxidation attacks cellulose molecules with oxygen from the air, causing darkening and increased acidity. In addition, the lignin in groundwood paper breaks down quickly under the influence of ooxygen and ultraviolet light. Lighht-innduced ooxidation of lignnnin is what turns newspapers yellow after a few days' exposure to sunlight. (Light can also cause some printing inks to fade.)

In acid hydrolysis, the cellulose fibers are cut by a reaction involving heat and acids, resulting in paper that turns brown and brittle. The sources of acidity include lignin itself, air pollution, and reaction byy-products from the oxidation of paper. Anoter major source is alum, which is often used with rosin to prepare the paper surface for accepting printing inks. Alulm eventually releases sulfuuriic acid in paper.

Acidity and alkalinity are measured in units of pH, with 0 the most acidic and 14 the most alkaline. (Neutral pH is 7..00) Because the scale is based on powers of 10, a pH of 4.5 is actually 200 times more acidic than a pH of 6.5. Fresh newsprint typically carriies a pH of 4.5 or less, while older more deteriorated paper on the verge of crumbling, may run as low as pH 3.0. Although some modern papers are made acid free, most paper collectibles are aciddic and need special treatment to lenngthen their lives.

Other factors which contribute to the destruction of paper include extremes of temperature and humidity, insects, rodents, mold and improper handling and storage.

Guidelines for Preservation

First and foremost, keep your paper collectibles cool, dark and dry. Store books and other items in an unheated room, if possible, and regularly monitor the humidity. Excess heat and humidity should be controlled with an air conditioner and a dehumidifier. Storage materials such as envelopes, sleeves and boxes, should be of archival quality only to prevent contamination of their contents.

Polyethylene and Polypropylene

For years, collectors have stored their comic books, postcards and other collectibles in polyethylene bags, PVC sheets and plastic wraps. Although such products may be useful in keeping away dirt, grease and vermin, many plastic sleeves contain plasticizers and other additives which can migrate into paper and cause premmature aging. Booth polyethyllene and polyproppylene contain solvents and additives in their manufacture to assure clarity and increase the flexibility in the plastic. Polyethylene when uncoated without any solvents s a good moisture barrier but has a high gas transmission rate, and eventually shrinks and loses its shape under warmer conditions.

In recent years polypropylene bags have been sold under the guise of being archivally sound. This is far from the truth. Only uncoated and untreated material is suitable for archival protection. Currently, the only way to seal pollypprropppylene is to add a substance called PVDC (Polyvinyl Dichlooride which is a relative of PVC) tooo allow the material to be heat sealed. Therefore, once you add the harddmful additive, the sleeve now becomes non-archival and should not be used for long term storage.

Mylar

According to the US Library of Congress, the preferred material for preserving valuable documents is uncoated archival quality polyester film, such as Mylar type D by DuPont Co. or equivalent material Melinex 516 by ICI Corp. Mylar is an exceptionally strong transparent film that resists moisture, pollutants, oils and acids. With a life expectancy of hundreds of years, Mylar will outlast most other plastics. In addition, the brilliance and clarity of Mylar enhances the appearance of any paper collectible.

Acid Free Boards and Boxes

Because ordinary cardboard is itself acidic, storage in cardboard boxes may be hazardous to your collection, and is a leading cause of premature deterioration of paper collectibles. For proper storage, only acid free boards that meet the US Government's MINIMUM requirements are acceptable. These requirements have been defined as boards having a 3% calcium carbonate buffer throughout and a minimum pH of 8.5. Anything less will hasten your collection's destruction. While many advertisers claim that their boards are "acid-free at time of manufacture," they are in reality only spray coated with an alkaline substance making them acid free for only a very short time. Boards termed "acid-free at time of manufacture" do not offer sufficient protection or storage for anything other than short term. True acid-free boards have been impregnanted with a calcium buffer resulting in an acid-free, alkaline pH content of 8.5 throughout.

Another way to extend the longevity of your collectibles is to deciidify them before storage. Deacidifying sprays and sollutions are now available for home use. By impregnating the paper with an alkaline reserve, you can neutralize existing acids and inhibit oxidation, acidity and staining due to certain fungi. However, it is best left to the professionals to deacidify your paper collectibles. Deacidification with proper storage conditions will add centuries to the lifetime of paper.

Posters

http://www.posters123.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=David_M_Paul

6 Tips to Stop Mold Growing in Your Home

By Carlo Morelli

It is normal to find mold spores in a homes indoor air and surfaces such as clothes, walls, and furniture. Most of the time mold spores found indoors are from outside sources. Regular housekeeping cleaning helps keep mold levels low. Cleaning small areas of visible mold, like the mold around your shower, is obligatory to maintain sanitary conditions.

When you should be more concerned is when your home has a large-scale of active mold growing. Such problems are most likely to happen when there’s been an on-going water leak, flood, or excessively high levels of humidity in the home. Indoor mold growth may lead to high levels of airborne mold spores, which, in turn, can trigger the spread of mold growth from the original source to additional areas of the home having high moisture levels. Extensive mold growth will damage your home and furnishings, like carpets, sofas and cabinets.

Over a period of time, uncontrolled mold growth can even instigate damage to structural elements of your home. While there is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment, keeping your home clean and dry can avert extensive mold growth and the ensuing damage.

Damage to your home and possessions is not the only reason to be concerned with mold. Although most people are exposed to small amounts of mold or their spores on a daily basis without apparent harm, mold is an unsanitary condition that may present potential health risks to certain individuals.

Possible adverse health effects produced by molds can include allergic, irritating, or toxigenic effects, and even infections, allergic reactions being the most common. Symptoms reported by affected people include: respiratory conditions, such as wheezing, difficulty breathing, and shortness of breath, sneezing and/or nasal congestion, eye and/or throat irritation, headaches and fatigue.

Here are a few tips to keep moisture from becoming a breeding ground in your home for molds.

1. Ensure that bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-creating sources are vented to the outside

2. Take care not to block any of your house’s air conditioning vents

3. Install de-humidifiers in basements and crawlspaces.

4. Use your kitchen’s exhaust fans when cooking

5. Install insulation on cold surfaces like piping, air ducts or basement walls to lessen possibilities of condensation

6. Install moisture sensor alarms in potential water back-up and overflow areas to alert you when a leak occurs.

Carlo Morelli writes for OnlineTips.Org, where you can read tips on basement dehumidifiers, Oreck air purifiers, and other home and garden topics.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Carlo_Morelli

Dehumidifiers Are Essential to Make Life Easier

By Cherles Mark

Dehumidifiers are designed in such a way so that humidity level in your room or home may remain under control. Basically, dehumidifiers are nothing more than air conditioners which come with cold and hot coils in the same box. By making use of the fan, a dehumidifier draws air from your room and cold coil condense the moisturizer and converts it into the dry air. This dry air keeps your room at normal temperature after passing through the cold coil. That's the simple process which is sued in dehumidifiers.

If you are looking to buy dehumidifier for your home, then you must keep in mind that there are different designs available in the market for whole house dehumidifiers, closet dehumidifiers, basement dehumidifiers and portable humidifiers. Though it is a great thing that the variety has increased and you no longer have to choose amongst the clunky dehumidifiers with wood-grained finish, but, the problem of choosing amongst the so many is still there which makes it difficult to find the best dehumidifier.

In case you don't know how to differentiate between the worst and the best dehumidifier, then here is what must be kept in mind while finalizing your buying decision.

• Always keep in mind that you must buy a dehumidifier after considering the size of your room. There are lots of portable dehumidifiers which are available in the market, but, if you will choose a portable humidifier without considering the size of your room then you will have face certain problems, biggest of which will be the excessive noise. In case of limited space, you can consider whole house dehumidifiers because they can be attached with your furnace and free up a bit more space. They, however, are more expensive to use and installation can also create a problem for you.

• It doesn't matter if you are buying a whole house dehumidifier or closet dehumidifier, you must make sure that it comes with built-in humidistat. An indicator light should also be there for easy monitoring along with timers to control humidity levels in the right way. This control is essential because an excessively low humidity can give rise to certain problems.

• Choosing the dehumidifier with the right air filter is one of the most important things to keep in mind. Although it is important for all dehumidifiers, but, you must pay special attention to it while buying a basement dehumidifier. The filter is important because it enhances the air quality and prevents allergic reactions. So, you must lay emphasis on this point while shopping for basement dehumidifier and don't forget that basement dehumidifiers should be extremely powerful.

All in all, it can easily be said that choosing the best dehumidifier is all about checking its few most important things. You can only make a right decision if you will consider its value, performance, ease of use and features. So, try to make a right decision by spending some time in learning more about the dehumidifiers and keeping aforementioned points in mind.

For any more information on the designs, shapes, sizes and prices of dehumidifiers, please visit http://www.dehumidifiertips.com/

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Cherles_Mark

Accent lighting - Adding the right touch to your home lighting

by: Nicole Martins
Accent lighting - With highly functional task lighting, spaces like the laundry room are brightly lit so that you can see the whites versus the darks. However, such bright light does not create a soft mood or add drama; for this you choose accent lightings.

Accent the mood with wall dimming options

First stop in creating mood and accent around the home is to incorporate wall dimmers to light fixtures, including ceiling mounts and chandeliers. This approach is very commonplace and gives you options to fully accentuate the room or produce softer more gentle lighting.

Emphasize artwork and wall hangings with accent lights

Adding a wall mounted museum light or picture light is an excellent way to accent fine artwork; two sconces positioned on each side of the painting will also add emphasize. This can be done with any wall hanging: mirrors frames are nice to accent.

Living room: downlights can emphasize an area

For social areas such as the living room you can both soften lighting and gently accentuate an area. For example, adding a couple of down lights in the ceiling over a living room sofa, toned down with dimming options, can cast gentle pools of light. This can accentuate the focus to this area while providing spillover light to the walls and washing the whole room with pleasant light.

Accentuate and decorate a kid's room with string lighting

For kids rooms string lighting can create wonderful accent to a nicely decorated bedroom. You can buy them in shapes and themes such as: submarines, cars, hearts, stars and more. Not only will this add a nice accent and touch; colorful lights can be used at night for children afraid of sleeping in complete darkness. You will find that you can dramatically change the look of your room simply by making small changes with the accents. See how easy it is to get a designer beach theme look in your bedroom without shelling out the big bucks.

If you’re not sure exactly what you want in your beach desing, try looking in decorating magazines and books to get a flavor of the accessories you would like to see in your bedroom. For keeping the beach look consistent, you’ll have to limit yourself to only purchase the accessories that match your theme.

Colors for a beach décor should make you think of the beach. Light and breezy with lots of blues and maybe even some yellows. If you prefer neutral tones think of the beige of beach sand and the color of shells.

Incorporate sea shells, ocean prints, and other seaside accents that will help bring out the beach in your bedroom. You should group your accessories in odd numbers. It always looks nice if your groupings consists of tall and short accessories mixed together. An interesting group of accents might consists of some shells aside a nice beach theme frame and a taller lamp.

Use beach theme prints and photos on your walls to establish the theme throughout your bedroom. Many people do not know how to correctly hang a piece of art and this makes a big difference to the visual appeal. Whether you are hanging a large oil painting or a small print, the middle of the piece should be at eye level. If you have a large piece of artwork you can try using it as a headboard. When hanging prints or photos behind a table, always place them 7 to 10 inches above the table. Hang pictures in circular, triangular, or rectangular geometric groupings to add interest.

When accessorizing your bedroom don’t forget about the lighting. When purchasing lamps make sure to buy ones that go with the beach theme you want to create. For beach style lighting try using clear glass lamps filled with shells or figural light house shaped lamps.

Area rugs can define a space and pull your bedroom together. Rest furniture completely on the rug for a warmer effect. Only use rugs that go with your beach accessories.

Using pillows can add interest as well. Use several at the top of the bed and vary the texture colors and patterns while still keeping the color and theme within your overall bedroom design.

Don’t think you have to buy everything for your bedroom at once. Shop around to find the perfect accessories to match the beach theme in your bedroom. You can find bargains at consignment stores flea markets and yard sales.

About the author:
Lee Dobbins writes for http://www.bedroom-designs-and-decorations.com/where you can find out more about decorating your bedroom. Fall is here and winter isn’t far away. It’s one of the busiest times of year for interior decorators.

“The reason we’re so busy is people really get energized in the fall,” says Thomas Pheasant, an award winning interior designer from Washington, D.C. “The change in temperature serves as a signal to start focusing more on the indoors to get ready for winter.”

Pheasant says one of the best, and easiest places to start, is in the room where you spend a majority of your time: the bedroom. “You don’t have to start moving furniture all over the place to change the look of the room,” says Pheasant. “Changing your bedding and curtains is often all it takes to make a dramatic difference.”

Pheasant says the same colors you see on the trees outside --- orange, gold, red, brown and olive green -- have great appeal indoors. “They really set the mood of the season, especially when combined with paisley and velvet textures.”

The bedroom isn’t the only place where bold color and texture changes will have a quick and noticeable impact. You can also set the mood of the season by putting some dried leaves or branches on the coffee table, and colorful pillows and a slip cover on your sofa. A seasonal bowl of apples on the dining room table, along with slip covers on the chairs, will also make a big impact.

So where do you start if you want to bring the fall “look” into your own home? “Start with materials. The kinds of fabric or color you choose can really change the attitude of the room,” says Pheasant. “Velvet and damask are formal patterns that are more appropriate for fall and winter. Linen, paisley and leather are more modern and better suited for spring and summer.”

Pheasant recommends you take his ideas to an interior designer for help implementing them. “Mistakes are expensive. Professional designers have resources available that most people do not. Hiring someone can make your life so much easier,” says Pheasant.

If you ultimately decide to take Pheasant’s advice, pieces from his collection of furniture and accessories are sold at Baker Furniture and over 200 other independent dealers throughout the country. Without it, the basement would be damp and useless, mold and mildew would grow promoting ill health and insects would have a perfect place to live. Your basement is underground, humid and in constant contact with the cool damp earth. If you don’t control the moisture and humidity throughout the year through dehumidifiers, your carpet and furniture could be ruined, even photographs can be destroyed. I have always found that I am more comfortable when the humidity is lower. I don’t like hot weather, but I would rather have it be dry and hot than cool and damp. What is it they say? “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.” You might want to consider installing a ceiling fan to work in tandem with the dehumidifier. You can find all kinds of styles at http://www.portable-air-conditioiner-4u.com. They help circulate the air, will dry out the basement even more and you will feel much more comfortable. Ceiling fans don’t cool the air, but you will feel better because of evaporation than if no fan were there at all.

Excessive moisture can be present in the air any time of the year, so it is important to have a dehumidifier that can deal with hot and cold climates. In order to dry out all parts of the home, consider a portable dehumidifier with wheels and a handle for ease of movement from room to room. Place your portable dehumidifiers in various positions around your apartment or home. Experiment with the settings depending on the local forecast and the time of day. Generally, the humidity level decreases at night as a result of cooler temperatures. When using a dehumidifier in rooms that are especially damp such as a basement, keep the doors and windows closed as much as possible. Keep closet doors open to dry out shoes and clothing. Also make sure you put only clean clothes in the closet or in enclosed places as just a little bit of soil is enough to breed mold and mildew. You must clean your dehumidifiers on a weekly basis. Mold spores, bacteria, mildew can accumulate in the dehumidifier's grate. Make sure you unplug the unit before removing water or doing any cleaning.
Living in a home with mold and mildew is terrible for your respiratory system. All kinds of allergy symptoms can arise when your home is too humid. When you take control of your environment through the use of a dehumidifier, ceiling fan, air conditioner, or other cooling system, you will have a better place for your family to live and work. Portable cooling systems also reduce the strain on the environment. You are only working with one small space and not a complete home so you are using less energy, saving you money and power usage for the community. If you have a particularly hot and humid summer, this can really make a difference. The technology we have today gives us many reasonably priced options for keeping cool, dry and comfortable.

About the author:
Beverly Marshall is a successful freelance writer offering guidance and suggestions for consumers buying portable air conditioners, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers, air filters and more. For those of you who don’t yet know what a platform bed is, it’s an exciting, old way of sleeping that incorporates a simple, elegant frame and a single mattress. Its lines have been used in Europe, Scandinavia, and Japan for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Platform beds can be made of wood or metal. If you’re looking to build a platform bed, you’re probably thinking about wood.

Platform beds can be extremely simple. The extremely simple platform beds have no headboard or footboard, and certainly no canopy. They incorporate slats, which, in effect, replace the need for a box spring, since, because they are sturdy yet somehow slightly flexible, support the single mattress on top. The result is that you get a good night’s sleep, are very comfortable, and yet don’t end up with back pains or numb muscles in the morning.

It’s ever better for your back than sleeping on the floor. And now, with the rapid proliferation of memory foam, your platform bed can be even more comfortable and healthy. Memory foam is a gel-like polymer that accepts your shapes and bones, but supports it fully. (It was first used in hospitals, and is now a popular mattress and pillow material.)

Platform bed plans can be more complex too; you can add headboards, footboards, canopies, even extra flourishes and storage units. You can build the storage units as one with the bed frame, or you can create rolling drawers supported by castors, so that the drawers are modifiable and easily maneuverable throughout your bedroom.

It’s not the most difficult job in the world for a handyperson. If you want to build a platform bed, you can order platform bed plans from any of a number of plans retailers. Woodworking clubs, furniture enthusiast groups, and other organizations can give or sell you plans. You can also buy plans online.

About the author:
Platform Beds Info provides detailed information about contemporary, Japanese, discount, and wood platform beds and platform storage beds, as well as platform bed frames and plans.
